Chapter Eight
At a quarter after ten the next morning, Elena and Braden prepared to meet the first potential nanny, who’d just driven into the yard. She’d arrived fifteen minutes late, but Elena wouldn’t hold that against her. After all, things happened, cars didn’t start, people took a wrong turn... Still, the directions to the ranch were pretty easy to follow.
When the bell rang, Braden answered the door, introduced himself and greeted the sister of his friend. “It’s nice to finally meet you, Lola.”
The attractive woman, who was in her mid to late twenties, took his hand in both of hers. “Mucho gusto, Señor Rayburn.”
“Call me Braden,” he said, as he led her into the living room. “Please have a seat.”
Elena could only gape at the woman seeking a nanny position. Surely Braden had noticed her inappropriate outfit—the black spiked heels, the leopard-print miniskirt that revealed long, shapely thighs and the black Lycra tank top that barely contained a pair of breasts, the size of which would cause anyone to question whether they were natural or enhanced by surgery.
“Can I get you something to drink?” Braden asked. “Coffee, iced tea, water...?”
Lola must have been in awe of the man or undecided about what she wanted because she merely stared at him and failed to answer.
Elena could excuse herself to bring out a tray of drink selections, but she remained rooted to the living room floor, giving Lola another once-over and coming to an early judgment.
Did this woman think she was interviewing to be a cocktail waitress, rather than a nanny?
Elena was stunned, although Braden didn’t appear the least bit unbalanced by her appearance. But then why would he be? He was a man, wasn’t he?
“Well, then,” Braden said, rubbing his hands together and looking a bit sheepish.
Okay, so he had been a little taken aback by the attractive woman.
He turned to Elena, as if handing off the baton to the interview. But even though she tried to come up with a couple of questions to ask, she couldn’t help focusing on the double Ds that spilled out of Lola’s scooped neckline.
Enough of that, she told herself. She shouldn’t write off the woman too quickly. So she opted to give her another chance. That is, until she caught Braden smiling as if he’d just met Sofía Vergara—or rather, her sexy younger sister—on the red carpet in Hollywood.
“So, Lola,” Elena asked, “have you ever worked with children before?”
The well-endowed Latina appeared to be stumped by the question, so Elena asked her again in Spanish.
Lola brightened and lifted up her right hand, spreading all five fingers and flashing long, bright red acrylic nails. “Si. Mi mamá tiene cinco niños.”
Oh, wow. So she couldn’t speak English? If Braden chose her, how the heck was that going to work out for him?
Interpreting, Elena said, “Her mother has five children.”
“So you helped raise them?” he asked.
“Que dice?” Lola glanced at Elena quizzically.
Great. Braden was going to need an on-site interpreter if he wanted to communicate with her.
When Elena translated his question, Lola spoke in rapid-fire Spanish.
